Reading Time: < 1 minute

Massmart employees in Cape Town belonging to trade union, SACCAWU, gathered at the Brackenfell Makro parking lot to picket as part of their nationwide protest action. They are part of the more than 18 000 Massmart employees who have embarked on a countrywide protected strike.

They are protesting against the changing of working hours and wage increases.

Jan Kotze, SACCAWU’s Regional Educator in the Western Cape, says in future they will explore the option of a class action and challenge courts to intervene on narrowing the wage gap between low-paid workers and executives as per the prescripts of the Bill of Rights.

“That’s why we say these inequalities at company levels have an impact also on how communities operate hence our action against this company because that will also inform communities and social institutions in support of workers’ rights,” Kotze explains.
