The African National Congress (ANC) leader Mzwandile Masina was forcibly removed from the Democratic Alliance-run Ekurhuleni Municipal chambers after chaos erupted yesterday.

The DA says the council was to deal with the state of the city address by Mayor Tania Campbell.

Reports say the speaker of the council ruled that the ANC Caucus leave the chamber after allegedly causing numerous disruptions.

The ANC has accused Speaker Raymond Dhlamini of abusing council standing orders and law enforcement after he allegedly refused to engage council members.

DA chief whip in Ekhurhuleni, Ald Shandu, says there was unhappiness among ANC councillors about a number of issues including the alleged use of an insulting word and answers to questions posed in the chamber.

ANC Chief Whip in the Ekurhuleni Caucus, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, says the speaker failed dismally to lead the proceedings on Thursday.

Dlabathi says, “There was never disorder from the side of the ANC caucus, all that we were doing, we were engaging within the prescripts of the standing orders which provide for us to raise a point of order as and when we realise that the proceedings are not going according to the rules. From the onset, the speaker of the council is incompetent. He has demonstrated his inability to preside impartially over council.”
