Mashaba in talks with NPA over businesses defrauding the city

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he is talking to the National Prosecuting Authority (ANA) to ensure that those involved in defrauding the city are brought to book.

He says this follows his concern that some of the officials in the city’s finance department and City Power are defrauding the city.

Mashaba says the officials are involved in helping some businesses to receive water and electricity illegally.

He led a blitz in Johannesburg targeting some two thousand businesses that are defaulting the city.

Five people were arrested for failure to pay for services.

The mayor says this cannot be allowed to continue.

“They are receiving water and electricity illegally connected which I think it’s a serious offence.  They claim not to know who connected them. In December, I led a blitz in the city … we cut them and we go back a few weeks later they are reconnected,” adds Mashaba.
