Mary J. Blige and Tyler Perry were among the stars set to be special honourees at the BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The annual BET Awards, which began in 2001, celebrate the works of not only musicians and actors of colour, but also sportsmen and women.

The awards, which were hosted this year by actress Regina Hall, have grown in prominence over the years and are watched by nearly 6 million Americans.

Johnny Gill told Reuters on the blue carpet “I’ve been here since they started or right before they started so to be a part of this and watch how it’s evolved and how it’s growing, it’s nothing short of spectacular, amazing and so it’s awesome and I’m always honoured when they call me.”

Lyric Ross, who was nominated for her role in ‘This is Us’, said “Black people are really being celebrated right now. We’re all coming together as one and really just celebrating us and who we are so that’s really inspired me to be myself, be my true self.”
