Premier Soccer League side Maritzburg United has confirmed that one of their rising young stars, Luyanda Ntshangase has died following a long stay in hospital, after being struck by lightning during a match in Pietermaritzburg two months ago.

The promising 21-year-old had been in an induced coma since the incident.

Ntshangase, who made his debut against Kaizer Chiefs in October 2016, is the third Maritzburg player to perish in a little more than two years – after midfielders Mondli Cele and Mlondi Dlamini died in separate car accidents.

The club will be meeting with the Ntshangase family in order to finalise the memorial service and funeral details.
