Mapisa-Ngqakula to visit Vietnam

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Ngqakula is due to travel to Vietnam this week.

This as South Africa and Vietnam honours 25 years of diplomatic ties. After the demise of apartheid, South Africa opened itself to the outside world.

Diplomatic ties between Vietnam and South Africa commenced in the early 1990s.

In 2007, former President Thabo Mbeki visited Vietnam to further tighten the relations through the establishment of the defence committee, (DEFCOM).

The two countries continue to share military expertise.

Vietnam is among the countries were land is owned by government. Citizens are allowed to use the land provided they pay tax.

With land ownership being an issue in South Africa it remains to be seen what lesson can be learnt.

A sore point for both countries however, is the scourge in rhino poaching in South Africa, with the horns and skins believed to be smuggled to the East.

In 2016, a total number of 458 poached rhino carcasses were found.

That’s why it’s become more important for the two countries to strengthen cooperation.
