Mantashe denies deliberately deepening energy crisis

Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, has denied reports that he is deliberately deepening the country’s energy crisis by refusing municipalities to procure energy from Independent Power Producers (IPP).

The country is experiencing rotational power outages – with fears that this could be ramped to Stage 6.

However, earlier the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced short and medium-term interventions to meet the country’s energy demands.

These include steps to allow IPPs to come on stream.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa is meeting Eskom board and management. Ramaphosa is expected to brief the media after the meeting.

The meeting is taking place at Eskom’s headquarters in Megawatt Park is also attended by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and Mantashe.
