Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has criticised mine-owners who abandon disused mines, saying it leads to criminal activities.

Mantashe was speaking at the Mining Indaba at Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal where emerging miners are discussing issues affecting them.

He says there should be ways of tracing the owners of those mines to force them to comply with safety regulations.

Referring to the Mining Charter, Mantashe says the department will meet the deadline of the Mining Charter within three months.
