Western Cape police have launched a manhunt for hijackers who shot and wounded a policeman in Cape Town on Friday.
Spokesperson Sergeant, Noloyiso Rwexana, says police from the Maitland Flying Squad received information about a hijacked vehicle in the Athlone area.
She says the officers spotted the vehicle in a parking area, while waiting for backup. The suspects started shooting at them with automatic rifles.
One of the officers was wounded in the leg and is recovering in hospital.
The suspects fled in another vehicle that was recovered later. An AK 47 rifle was also found in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, another search is under way for three suspects who shot and killed six men and seriously wounded a seventh in Khayelitsha. Police Spokesperson Novela Potelwa says the victims are aged between 29 and 36.
“It’s alleged that the victims were in a friend’s home at PJS informal settlement when the gunmen stormed the property and fired several shots on Saturday night. Five people were killed on the scene and the sixth died in hospital. Another is still receiving medical treatment after being seriously wounded.”
Potelwa says police have appealed to anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
