Police are searching for several suspects in connection with the attempted cash in transit heist in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

One suspect was shot and killed and a security guard wounded during a shoot out between the robbers and security officials.

ER 24 Paramedics says they attended to two security guards and a female civilian who were injured. The incident happened on Atlas and Northrand roads.

This is the same area where in May this year five alleged robbers were arrested after two cash vans were bombed.

National police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says there have been increased efforts by police to fight the spate of heists.

“After the implementation of that civilisation-normalisation operation, we started to see a drastic decline particularly in cash-in-transit heists.”

“In the majority of these cases the last few days we can say that no money has been taken. Money is not taken where there’s attempts on Cash in Transit vehicles because of the security measures that are being implemented both by private security as well as SAPS.
