Mangope to be laid to rest

The former Bophuthatswana homeland leader, Lucas Mangope will be buried on Saturday at his home village Motswedi, outside Zeerust in the North West.

94-year- Mangope died last Thursday at Lehurutshe hospital.

Scores of mourners are expected to descend on the tiny North West village of Motswedi to pay their last respect to Mangope who ruled on what was called Bophuthatswana for about 17 years.

Amongst those who will be speaking during the funeral is North West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo, former Bophuthatswana ministers Seroke Kgobokwe, and Clement Sehume.

The funeral service is expected to only last for less than five hours as per the wishes of the deceased.

Kgosi Mangope’s United Christian Democratic Party played an important role as an opposition in the province.
