Mangaung Metro operations suspended as metro officers cordon off building

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Operations have been suspended at the Mangaung Metro Municipal headquarters in Bloemfontein.

This after the newly appointed metro police officers cordoned off the building’s premises to prevent municipal workers and councillors from entering.

IEC employees whose offices are based in the city hall next to the main Bram Fischer building are also affected.

Insiders say metro officers are demanding appointment letters.

The appointment of the metro police has been mired in controversy which forced the municipality to abandon the launch last week.

This after civic organisations raised concerns about flawed appointment processes.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has previously called for recruitment of the metro police service to be properly budgeted.

The party has also previously demanded answers following the appointment of metro police officers who allegedly have criminal records.

The party says millions of rands have been spent on the appointment process since 2016.
