Mangaung candidates yet to be confirmed

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) has still not finalised the nominations list for its top six leadership candidates that will be voted for at the elective conference in Mangaung. The focus will be on the party’s Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe and National Executive Council (NEC) member, Cyril Ramaphosa. This, as candidates nominated by party branches are expected to say whether they accept nomination or not. The last few weeks have seen provinces announcing their preferred candidates. Motlanthe has been nominated by three provinces while President Jacob Zuma is wanted by six provinces to retain his position. “We have to tally all the votes together and then go to the candidates and ask them whether they are prepared to accept the nomination. Once we have the confirmation, we then prepare ballot papers and the election will then take place,” says the ANC’s Electoral Commission member, Frene Ginwala. Other provinces have nominated Cyril Ramaphosa and Tokyo Sexwale for the position of Deputy President.
