Mandela Month Activities 2016

Service was close to Nelson Mandela’s heart. It characterises every stage of his life from activist to prisoner, to President and to pensioner.

His birth month of July affords us an opportunity to rally together behind his ideals and to promote his legacy.

See below for a timeline of events for July 2016.

Monday 18 July 2016 15:31

8th July: Taxi Drivers Countdown to Mandela Day
Venue: MTN Taxi Rank
SA taxi supporting Nelson Mandela Day with a Mandela Day bumper sticker on + 10 000 taxis at the rank. This project is spearheaded by Nelson Mandela Foundation, in partnership with the taxi industry through SA Taxi and Suzuki.

13th July: Trek4Mandela
Venue: OR Tambo International. Terminal B viewing deck
Time: 06:00 – 09:00
Last year 36 people took to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with the aim of raising awareness and funds to keep 27 000 girls in school. The goal was met. This year 43 people will join the cause with the aim of keeping 350 000 girls in school throughout the year.

14th July: Follow the Sun Global Mandela Day
This year, Stop Hunger Now SA will be part of the Global Movement to Eradicate Hunger on the First International Mandela Day. Further, in order to live the legacy, Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa will be hosting Meal Packaging Events from the 13 July to the 21 July 2016 across 7 cities in South Africa.

14th-16th July: 67 Minutes of Laughter
This year’s “67 Minutes of Laughter” will be held at the brand new, state-of-the-art Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch in Johannesburg. The show starts at 8pm and will run from 14 July to 18 July 2016. Tickets are available from Ticketpro at R167.00 per show. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Hospital Trust.

15th July: Vodacom Change the world
Venue: Vodacom World, Midrand
Time: 09:00 – 10:30
Vodacom partners with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Department of Basic Education to help focus on the importance of food security as proper nutrition is important for the development of schools goers.

15th July: Bikers for Mandela
Venue: Vodaworld Midrand
Time: 06:00 – 08:00
Bikers will be travelling from Johannesburg to Mpumalanga to serve the community through the four pillars of Mandela Day.

16th of July: MTN Music for Madiba
Venue: Phase1, MTN Innovation Centre
Time: 12:00 – 16:00
MTN celebrating Madiba’s legacy. This will be the 3rd annual concert

17th July: Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture
Venue: University of Pretoria (Mamelodi Campus)
Time: 17:00 – 20:00
The Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture Series invites prominent people to drive debate on significant social issues. The lecture series is an important event on the Foundation’s calendar, and encourages people to enter into dialogue, often about difficult subjects in order to address the challenges we face today.

18th July: NMF activation day
Venue: Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary
Time: 09:00 to 17:00
Staff from the Nelson Mandela Foundation, joined by partners and members of the community, went to do Mandela Day work at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary. This was to launch Mandela Day 2016. The work is by no means complete, on July 18, they will return and further their efforts.

18th of July: Habitat for Humanity in Orange Farm
Venue: Orange Farm Township
Habitat for Humanity will be building houses to focus on one of the four Mandela Day pillars – Shelter.

18th of July: Clean Up and Recycle SA Awareness launch with Plastic SA and Brand SA
Venue: KZN Coastal Richards Bay
Plastic SA and Brand SA in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to pick up litter and sorting it for recycling in KZN
