Reading Time: < 1 minute

An American activist on freedom of religion Ed Brown says former President Nelson Mandela was a good example of a leader who promoted and respected human rights.

Brown was one of the guest speakers at the African Parliamentarian Association for Human Rights who gathered in Parliament.

He serves on the International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion.

The networking session took place for the first time in South Africa in honour of Madiba and former President Thabo Mbeki.

“I am so thankful that you brought up Nelson Mandela, because he epitomised this, especially in his later years. We know about his younger years, but in his later years, he espoused peaceful co-existence.”

“He did not allow security issues or abuses by the other side to more abuses to our side – that’s a very important aspect of promoting human rights.”

“We must not allow those who want to destroy human rights to destroy the values that we have.”
