Manchester United honors Madiba

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Sir Alex Ferguson has dedicated Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Amazulu to Nelson Mandela who celebrated his 94th birthday on July 18. He also praised Amazulu for their splendid performance
The match played on the same day as Madiba’s birthday could have easily gone Amazulu’s way in the second half.Ferguson’s men showed tiredness and gaps appeared in defence, but Amazulu faded when it mattered most.
It was a closer match than anticipated, with many South Africans believing AmaZulu would be swept aside by the former European champions even though they were lacking many first-choice players like Wayne Rooney.
Federico Macheda scored the winner midway through the first half for the Red Devils.United came close to increasing the lead just before time when another Italian, substitute Davide Petrucci, rattled the crossbar.
The 19-time English champions are on the first leg of their world tour, which kicked off with the AmaZulu match. They also played Ajax in Cape Town to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The next leg takes them to China and a trio of European countries to finish the trip.
