The matter was remanded to the 18th of January for trial.

Former Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana’s two accomplices Cyril Madonsela and Thulani Mdaka have been sentenced each to a R30 000 fine or 8 months in prison in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg.

The court also prescribed anger management and substance abuse programs in addition to performing 300 hours of community service.

The two pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm following an altercation at a nightclub in Fourways west of Johannesburg in August this year. Manana was sentenced earlier this month and has already paid his R100 000 fine.

Handing out the sentence Magistrate Saras Naidoo said she considered a number of factors including the seriousness and prevalence of the crime and societal outrage. She says in this period of the 16 days of activism campaign a stern message has to be sent out to the community.

The state did not plead for imprisonment or for compensation for medical costs. The two will in 48 hours report at the Douglasdale police station for community service and will also enrol with Sanca for rehabilitation programs. They have also been declared unfit to possess firearms. Click below for more on the story:
