On Friday, Manamela refused to accept that she did not have the powers to sign off licences for NGOs that received mentally ill-patients.

Suspended Gauteng Mental Health Director Dr Makgabo Manamela is expected to face further cross-examination Monday at the Life Esidimeni hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg.

On Friday, Manamela refused to accept that she did not have the powers to sign off licences for NGOs that received mentally ill-patients.

This after Legal Aid SA’s Lilla Crouse tried to get a concession from Manamela based on Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s letter that was presented in Parliament that all licences were unlawful.

143 patients subsequently died at these NGOs.

Manamela has already been on the witness stand for three days.

Retired Deputy Chief Justice, Dikgang Moseneke reminded her to avail herself again.

“I’m obliged to inform you and warn you that you should be here on Monday at 9:30 to submit to further cross examination. The current counsel is still busy, and there are at least three others who are going to ask you questions. So we still have a long way to go,” says Moseneke.
