On Friday, Manamela refused to accept that she did not have the powers to sign off licences for NGOs that received mentally ill-patients.

The Life Esidimeni hearings have been adjourned for now because suspended Gauteng Mental Health Director, Dr Makgabo Manamela, failed to show up, citing ill-health.

Manamela was forced to take the stand at the hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg on Monday, after being subpoenaed and failing in her application for a postponement.

After Monday’s grilling, she was expected to face more questions on Tuesday morning about her role in the transfer of patients, which resulted in 143 deaths.

“My client is actually not feeling well today, so that being the case I’d request that the matter stand down because I’ve been advised that she’ll be seeing a doctor. Maybe by 11:30 she’d have seen a doctor and I’ll advise as to what the doctor recommends,” says Manamela’s lawyer Lerato Mashilane.
