A 21-year-old Khayelitsha man has drowned at Camps Bay Beach in Cape Town.

The National Sea Rescue Institute says the man was caught in a rip current along with two friends Monday night.

The two friends were not harmed.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says members of the public initiated CPR on the man which was then taken over by NSRI medics and paramedics.

Despite extensive CPR efforts, the man was declared deceased on the scene.

Police have opened an inquest docket.

NSRI are appealing to the public to exercise caution around the coastline as rip currents occur all year round.

Lambinon says rip currents are prevalent all the time at all beaches. ‘We are urging the public to go to beaches only when lifeguards are on duty,” he says.
