Reading Time: 2 minutes

A man has allegedly shot and killed his 31-year-old wife at Namakgale township outside Phalaborwa in Limpopo.

Police were alerted by community members who heard gun shots and went to the scene where they found a woman dead. The suspect has fled.

Police suspect that the incident might be a domestic related problem.

The Social Development spokesperson Witness Tiva says government is worried about increasing cases of family violence.

“We have strategically deployed social workers across the province, for them to freely provide social support and intervene through our family preservation program. As the Department of Social Development in the province, we want to see a zero recording of this despicable act … [rooted] out against the vulnerable people of the society,” adds Tiva.

On Christmas Day, in another incident, a family member allegedly shot dead seven family members, including four children, at Jimmy Jones village outside Malamulele.

Earlier, neighbour, Phineas Hlungwani, said he did not bother to investigate as he thought firecrackers were being set off to celebrate Christmas Day.

Hlungwani added that he only realised the seriousness of the incident when police went to the scene.

“The Ndou’s are my neighbours. I got frightened from the time I heard the sound. At first, I thought the sound was from firecrackers not thinking was from a firearm. I only learnt about the death shortly before 1am when he came and told me there is a bad person by our gate.”

“I was so scared that I couldn’t go out until the police arrived. I am still shaken because these children from the Ndou regard me as their father figure because I grew together with the late father.”
