Malvern business owners count their losses after their shops were looted

Business owners whose shops were looted in Malvern east of Johannesburg this morning are counting their losses.

An estimated 50 shops have been looted and more than 50 vehicles burnt after a group of people went on a rampage.

Some of the shops were also burned. More than 30 people have now been arrested.

On Sunday morning, several other shops were looted in nearby Jeppestown.

The looting started after three people died in a fire in a building.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says:”We can confirm that several shops have been burnt and other looted. The fire-fighters are here.”
