Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has told supporters at a Freedom Day event that he will never return to the African National Congress (ANC).

He was reacting to a call by ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule for him to go back to the governing party. Magashule made the statement while campaigning in the North West on Friday.

Malema has addressed a Freedom Day rally at Seshego in Polokwane – with just over a week to go before the May 8 general elections.

“No it’s a joke. They do that every election with the hope to confuse the EFF electorate. I won’t go back to the ANC because for me to go back to the ANC, the ANC must go back to the conference and take a decision to unexpel me, because I’m expelled. So to say come back. As if ANC is Holiday Inn, you can do check in and check out, it doesn’t work like that. So I’m not even part of that mess, the ANC is declining and declining, now they are standing at 58% in terms of the latest research.”

Malema believes free education should have been prioritised when a new government dispensation was ushered in 25-years-ago. The ANC government implemented free higher education for poor students over a year ago following resolutions adopted at its NASREC elective conference.

Malema has told thousands of EFF supporters at a Freedom Day rally at Seshego in Limpopo, that people are dependent on free government services due to lack of education.

“We should have prioritised education because if you go to a research now, it says amongst graduates, its only 5% which is unemployed. So if we had had many graduates, it means we would not have these levels of unemployment. If you give people education for free, you are going to reduce a list of RDPs and a list of social grants. It means you have saved a lot of money. You can re-invest it in education. I don’t understand why we should even be fighting about free education.”
