MEC for Education in Mpumalanga Sibusiso Malaza has called on the police to swiftly arrest those who are involved in the torching of schools in the province.

This follows the torching of four schools in one week.

The two schools were gutted in Bushbuckridge and Matsulu after being set alight by service delivery protesters.

The school incidents affected midyear exams in the schools.  However, Malaza says examinations are now proceeding well after the department’s intervention.

“What disturbs us is what is happening in our schools. People burning our schools in a quest of demanding issues that relate to service delivery. In our view post democracy, the government has created platforms that individuals can use to voice their concerns, at no point it should amount to the burning of schools, from where we are as a department this is an act of criminality,” says Malaza.
