Sars official Jonas Makwakwa was right-hand man to suspended Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane.

Former South African Revenue Service (Sars) official and right-hand man, Jonas Makwakwa, to suspended Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane allegedly distanced himself in an email from the restructuring project undertaken during Moyane’s tenure. This came out at the SARS commission currently sitting in Pretoria.

This was despite the fact that Makwakwa was the leader of the project and worked closely with Bain Consulting Agency to introduce the new operating model.

The restructuring project at Sars has been widely slammed at the commission as inefficient and destructive.

Evidence leader, Carol Steinberg, read an email from Makwakwa to Fareed Khan, who heads up the compliance division at Sars.

“He says my criticism is not with the individuals, but is with the operational set up which I can see is hampering the smooth operation of the business. Now Mr Makwakwa was the leader of the operating model, and he says to Mr Khan, it’s quite a gracious mail, it says please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not criticising you or your people, it’s the operating model that doesn’t work.”
