The office of the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, says appropriate action will be taken against those who made false allegations against him.

This after the Special Tribunal cleared Makhura of any wrongdoing in the awarding of personal protective equipment (PPE) tenders worth millions of rands.

Recent media reports have indicated that in an affidavit to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the provincial Department of Health alleged that Makhura had given names of the companies that had to be appointed to supply and deliver PPE.

Makhura’s spokesperson, Vuyo Mhaga, says the Premier’s office has provided information to the SIU on the matter to be looked into.

“We are interested in who that person is, and the matter has been referred to the SIU and the SIU has acknowledged. They have the capabilities and technical know-how to investigate. We will be able to bring the residents of Gauteng into confidence in the appropriate action that must be taken,” explains Mhaga.

Allegations of corruption

Gauteng has been marred by a number of PPE corruption scandals with the latest being millions spent to disinfect and deep-clean schools in the province.

Gauteng Education says the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has started interviewing its officials after more than R430 million was spent on sanitising and deep-cleaning schools last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, MEC Panyanza Lesufi said he has also written to the Auditor -General regarding investigations into the matter.
