Gauteng Premier David Makhura has expressed concern at the proposed property rate hikes in Johannesburg which he has described at exorbitant.

This followed an outcry by Johannesburg property owners that the city has over-valued their properties.

On Wednesday, Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba announced that 8 00 property owners will start receiving new notices for properties that appear to be over-valued.

Gauteng Premier Spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane says Makhura will soon meet Mashaba regarding the issue.

“As he has mentioned in the state of the province address many of our residents are really feeling the pressure from a not-so-favourable economic environment with food prices and transport and other prices going up. Surely an additional cost of hiked rates will put enormous pressure on them. The premier has requested a meeting with the mayor of Johannesburg to discuss this matter.”
