Gauteng Premier David Makhura says he’s concerned about the eight-million unvaccinated people in the province.

Makhura says he fears that they are the ones who may severely fall prey to the newly discovered COVID-19 variant, Omicron, and that may accelerate its spread.

Gauteng is witnessing a sizeable increase in daily COVID-19 infections ahead of the festive season.

Makhura gave an update on COVID-19 in the province and outlined government’s plans to deal with the fourth wave and the Omicron variant.

“Those 8 million people are a problem for you and I. We want to send out a very clear message out there that we need to vaccinate. And vaccinating is the most powerful weapon in our hands in defeating the Omnicron virus.”

Makhura says Gauteng is on the cusp of the fourth wave:

On Wednesday, South Africa identified 8 561 new COVID-19 cases, which brings the total number of infections to 2 976 613. This increase represents a 16.5% positivity rate.

A further 28 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89 871 to date.
