The Makhonjwa Mountains in Barberton Mpumalanga has been declared as the province’s first World Heritage Site.

The inscription of the mountains on the World Heritage List was announced at the World Heritage Committee’s meeting in Manama, Bahrain.

Scientists revealed that the mountain’s rock formation is 3.6 million years old.

Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency Spokesperson Kholofelo Nkambule says the agency has been lobbying for many years for the mountain to be listed as a World Heritage Site.

The Makhonjwa Mountains inscription to the list brings to ten the number of World Heritage Sites in South Africa.
