Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Makhado family has vowed to honour the legacy of the late hip hop artist, Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado. Makhado is understood to have committed suicide due to depression last Wednesday.

The 34-year-old rapper leaves behind his wife, two children, mother, and five siblings.

Friends paid tributes to Makhodo at a private funeral in Bryanston, north of Johannesburg.

“I think about nine years together, here are some of the things I’m most grateful for; our journey as parents started at the beginning of our relationship. He was an amazing father to Jordan. They had the most incredible bond from day one. She brought softness to his life. And his to hers. Riky and I were then blessed with our second child, Mike. Our children taught both Riky and I the importance of family values,” said the grieving wife, Bianca Naidoo in honour of her husband and father of her two children.

“He always wanted me to figure out what I wanted to do for me, and to find which would set my soul on fire. Little did he know that he was it. Ours was a destined, pre-ordained match as though God himself made it. So, we would find each other in this lifetime. I was put in his life to love him, to care for him, and to help him on his journey to fulfill part of his purpose. Ours was a deep pure love.”

Riky Rick’s funeral service:

Mourners were all dressed in white to pay their last respects to the hip hop and fashion icon.

Riky Rick’s younger brother Phelwane Makhado described him as a loving brother and protector.

“The last time we spoke was the day before you left us. You told me you needed me tomorrow at 9am. I rushed you off the phone because I was busy with whatever I was doing and I felt I didn’t need to hear more. I was going to be riding with my big brother and that’s all I needed. I heard the hesitation in your voice to hang up. But you said, sharp boy, I will see you tomorrow. We had a relationship where you protected me and saved me. You used to say I did the same for you. It pains me so deep that I didn’t.”

The mother of the late hip hop artist, Louise Zondo, expressed gratitude for the lessons she learnt from her son’s vulnerability.

“I want to thank you for the lasting lessons that I learnt from your vulnerability. I want you to now rest. I want you to now go and meet with your freedom. We will carry on with your legacy. Your beautiful children will be led, will be loved. May it be well with you my son. Ahh Ndawo Ndou, Bamsanda, Vho Makhado. Lala ngoxolo mtanami.”

The Boss Zonke hitmaker will not only be remembered as a family man with a great fashion sense, but his legacy endures through his music.
