The African National Congress Youth League President (ANCYL), Collen Maine, says the country’s young democracy is under siege and it’s up to the youth to defend it.

He was addressing learners at Orlando West Secondary School in Soweto, Johannesburg.

This is part of their activities to mark the beginning of Youth Month.

Maine urged Orlando West Secondary pupils to study hard and complete their studies in order for them to contribute in helping build the country’s economy.

He urged learners not to abuse drugs.

Maine says Orlando West Secondary is one of the schools that played a critical role during the 1976 Student Uprising and urged them to uphold that important part of history.

This is the school that was the target of the 1976 riots which saw many learners beaten, killed and arrested for protesting against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools.
