Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane says the recent petrol price hike is an insult to the poorest of the poor who live under appalling conditions in South Africa.

He says the African National Congress-led government continues to show that it doesn’t care about the needs of the many citizens who continue to live below the poverty line – due to high unemployment rate.

Maimane visited the Noord taxi rank in the Johannesburg CBD where he interacted with taxi drivers and commuters about the effects of the petrol price increase on them.

“Now we must go and say, this thing of the RAF, this thing of the tax they are using to pay for e-tolls is enough. Life is getting hard – our people don’t work and this government only cares about themselves. sifuna umsebenzi so that we can ensure that our people are prosperous. People should know that we oppose all of these increases that Cyril Ramaphosa and his government are putting forward.”

Meanwhile, taxi drivers who had a chat with Maimane say they the increase in the fuel price will force them to hike taxi fares.
