Independent candidate, Eric Makhesi has campaigned alongside One SA leader, Mmusi Maimane in Gqeberha. Maimane is campaigning on behalf of 300 independent candidates throughout the country, 50 of those being in the Eastern Cape.

Maimane has expressed confidence that independent candidates will do well in Monday’s local government elections.

Makhesi is adamant that by running independently, he’ll be able to do more for his community.

“When I see what is going on in the community and also in our politics in our days. So these reasons pushed me to this decision. And I’d rather be an independent candidate than belong to a party because I must carry the business of the party and not of the people. So it’s easier to be independent. I can move to the citizen’s needs,” says Makhesi.

Supporting independent candidates

One SA Movement, founded by Maimane, who is the former leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), says the entity is not a political party but a civic movement.

The movement intends to support, train, equip and campaign for One SA endorsed independent candidates in wards and municipalities throughout the country.
