Maimane calls on stronger border controls

Democratic Alliance leader, Mmusi Maimane, says the South African National Defense Force must immediately be deployed to the Ramatlabama border post between the North West and Botswana.

Maimane, who visited the border post on Thursday, says drugs, human and child trafficking have increased by more than 50 per cent in the last ten years.

The border forms an important economic route for South Africa to the rest of the SADeC region. Maimane says Ramatlabama is the most porous border in the country.

“Our big concern here is that drugs, children , weapons can be moved into SA without any securing of our border. It became clear that even when we can here that there are no equipment that can detect scanners, police sniffer dogs, this is the place upon which, if you want to traffic drugs, harm our children this is the border post to do it in.”
