Mahumapelo to meet ANC top six officials

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The embattled North West Supra Mahumapelo is expected to meet the African National Congress (ANC) top six officials to finalise his fate on Monday.

This comes as the province continues to be gripped by political instability.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced they will meet with Mahumapelo next week.

Mahumapelo continues to cling to power, despite the repeated calls for his resignation. In an unprecedented turn of events this week, he announced he would step down, only to make a U-turn the following day.

He then appointed an acting Premier whilst he took leave. Mahumapelo is adamant he will step down as soon as he knows who will succeed him.

Ramaphosa says: “We are going to have deep discussions about this whole process and in the coming week we will be addressing the challenges and will resolve the issues of the North West. We are going to have discussions with Supra Mahumapelo.”

However, analysts believe the indecisiveness may cost the ANC in the polls in 2019.

Political analyst Stephen Friedman says:”The provincial premiers in what is used to call the premier league are still in control of their provinces. And as long as that continues you will have a situation where the president of the country is pretty firmly in control of what happens in the national government but is not in control of what is happening in several provinces and North West is one of the provinces which he is not in control.”

Seven members of the legislature were removed from the IEC list this week. They are believed to be opponents of Mahumapelo in the PEC.  They will be replaced by a list led by former Education MEC, Johannes Tselapedi.

In 2011, Tselapedi was arrested for alleged corruption amounting to R12 million in the Education department.

He dismissed the charge as a political plot against him.
