Mahumapelo gives hint he might succumb to pressure to leave office

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Embattled North-West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has given a strong hint that he might succumb to pressure to leave office. This became evident during his remarks at the presentation of his office budget vote speech at the provincial capital Mahikeng.

The North West has suffered weeks of violent unrest by protesters blaming the premier for alleged corruption and poor service delivery.

The Premier surprised many when he made a remark that signaled that he has finally accepted the inevitable.

The Premier’s critics have cautiously welcomed news that their push for his recall is about to succeed.

North-West business forum Themba Gwabeni says:”There’s something absolutely wrong with him. We know when we started, for example, he said he was going to break the stadium and build a five-star hotel, things that are not tangible with things that are not even part of the African National Congress (ANC) manifesto.”

“We have even said today, that not only must the premier go, in fact the majority of his cabinet have been lame ducks there, they don’t like the man; neither loves the man, and has failed to advise him.”

ANC Lucky Kgabi says:”We welcome the departure of the premier, we understood the English that he used. We’re just awaiting the finalisation of the process, which is a letter that must be given to the speaker by Friday.”

The Inter-Ministerial Committee deployed by President Cyril Ramaphosa has concluded its work to investigate corruption allegations and lack of service delivery afflicting some provincial departments.

One political analyst argues that even though Mahumapelo might agree to step down, the ANC will still be faced with a huge task to restore public trust.

For now the ANC top officials remain mum about Mahumapelo’s future which will also form part of the discussions at the cabinet’s midweek gathering to be held in Cape Town.
