The fate of embattled North-West Premier Supra Mahumapelo is expected to be sealed during the meeting of the African National Congress’s Top Six at the party’s Luthuli House headquarters on Monday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa and the other five officials will discuss the decision of the party’s national working committee, which has recommended that Mahumapelo be recalled.

The political situation in the North-West remains tense, following weeks of violent protests sparked by calls for the premier to go. He’s accused of corruption and failure to provide basic services.

As pressure mounts that Mahumapelo be recalled, the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters is preparing to go ahead in calling for a motion of no confidence in his leadership.

Some of Mahumapelo’s detractors within the ANC have already expressed support for the motion should the party leadership fail to dislodge him from power.

The inter-ministerial team appointed by Ramaphosa to investigate the state of governance in the North-West will present its findings to cabinet on Wednesday.

The Health Department which is at the centre of corruption allegations has led to a protracted strike by members of trade union National Health Education & Allied Workers Union.

The department has been placed under administration after services at grounded to a halt.  There has also been calls that the provincial ANC leadership be dissolved and that a task team be formed to run the party affairs.
