Madikizela-Mandela’s grandchild slates his grandmother’s critics

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The grandson of the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Bambatha Mandela, has paid a moving tribute to the struggle icon, during her memorial service at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Bambatha has lambasted those who have continued to denigrate his grandmother’s integrity.

“This is time for mourning and a time to celebrate her legacy. For those who are still trying to drag the name of uMakhulu, archbishops and chiefs alike, the people are angry; we are hurt and we will not tolerate your defamatory messages. You must learn to respect this legendary individual instead of behaving like ungrateful children.”

Meanwhile, as thousands of mourners continue to trickle into Orlando Stadium in Soweto for Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s memorial service, security is a huge concern.

Many have spent a long time standing in long queues waiting to pass through the stadium’s entrance.

However, government Spokesperson Phumla Williams has defended the security arrangements saying precautionary measures need to be taken to avoid the possibility of a stampede.

“We try as much as we possibly can to take into account the security of the people that will be in that particular venue. So you will find that in some instances there is an inconvenience, but it’s not an inconvenience that is malicious, but it’s an inconvenience that we need to be responsible as government and make sure that these people when they come here they don’t come out with some injuries.” Click below for more on the story:
