Madiba’s 70th birthday tribute still holds biggest broadcast record

On this day, 25 years ago, the Nelson Mandela 70th tribute birthday concert was broadcast globally from the Wembley Stadium in London on June 11, 1988. The tribute is also believed to have helped add more pressure on the SA government at the time to release Mandela from prison.

The musical tribute to Mandela was sold and broadcast to over 67 countries worldwide. It’s aim to raise awareness about apartheid in South Africa.
Executive producer for theListen Campaign, Tony Hollingsworth, says the concert was made in a way that it could be enjoyed all over the world by different people. However, it was not watched inSouth Africa because it was banned at the time.
