African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu says one of the important milestones in Parliament to honour Madiba’s 100th birthday is the recent passing of two ground breaking pieces of legislation.
Mthembu says Madiba would have been very proud to see the passing of the Audit Amendment Bill to strengthen the powers of the Auditor General and the Political Party Funding Bill to regulate party funding.
He has reflected on the role of the ANC in Parliament as part of Madiba’s centenary celebrations.
“The legislation that we have passed amongst others the two and again our enhanced oversight over the executive, Madiba would have said this is what is expected of Parliament. This is why we have elected public representatives so that they can hold the executives accountable.
“And indeed we are holding the executive accountable. Yes there are improvements that we can still do but from where we are seated we are doing everything that would have been expected of us in holding our executives accountable,” Mthembu explained.
