Mabuza urges military vets to be patient

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Deputy President David Mabuza has urged members of the Military Veterans to be patient saying their plight will be addressed.

Mabuza is chairing the Presidential Task Team on Military Veterans responsible for the welfare of former soldiers of the liberation movements.

On Thursday, some of these ex-combatants allegedly held Defence Minister Thandi Modise and her deputy Thabang Makwetla as well as Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele hostage when the meeting called to discuss their plight failed to reach an amicable solution.

Speaking to the SABC on the sidelines of the African National Congress campaign trail in Mamelodi outside Pretoria earlier on Sunday, Mabuza says they are working around the clock to improve the living conditions of these ex-soldiers.

Government condemns the ministers hostage drama

Arrested military veterans to face kidnapping charges

Police say the 56 military veterans, who have been arrested following the drama in which three ministers were allegedly held hostage at a hotel in Irene, Pretoria, will be charged with kidnapping.

Gungubele says they had told their bodyguards not to act because doing so would have exacerbated an already volatile situation.

The 56 military veterans arrested are believed to have belonged to the ANC military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe, the Pan Africanist Congress’ (PAC) Azanian People’s Liberation Army (Apla) and Azanian People’s Organisation’s (Azapo) Azanian National Liberation Army (Azanla).
