Mabopane residents protest over electricity

Reading Time: 2 minutes

About 300 residents from Mabopane and surrounding areas have embarked on service delivery protest on Wednesday morning.

Angry residents have taken to the streets, saying they have been without electricity for months.

Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba says angry residents have barricaded roads with burning tyres and other objects.

Some frustrated residents took to social media to express their dismay at how they couldn’t go to work due to the protests.

Mahamba has warned protesters against the destruction of property after several traffic lights and road signs were damaged.

Although there are no reports of looting at this stage, Mabopane Square Shopping Centre has been closed as a precautionary measure.

The situation remains tense and no arrests have been made.

Morula Sun Road and Bushveld Road have been heavily affected by the protest.
