Heritage month ended on a high-note for maskandi and the advancement of women in traditional music.

This follows the crowning of Lungi Ngcobo as the queen of maskandi after her victory in a talent search competition in Durban Saturday night.

The 21-year-old impressed the judges and audience alike for her versatile approach to maskandi, as she can sing, dance and play the guitar.

Ngcobo who hails from Kwamakhutha grew up in a musical family. She was lauded for being an all-rounder.

She won R5000 but the main prize is becoming a member of the traditional music group, Izindlovukazi Zika-Mageba.

It’s hoped Lungi’s win will inspire more young women to follow their passion for traditional music, a musical genre that was previously a domain of men.
