Lorch dedicates the goal to his late brother

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates attacker Thembinkosi “Nyoso” Lorch has dedicated Saturday’s all-important goal that knocked out hosts Egypt in the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament to his late brother, who passed away in the Free State last week.

Lorch who was playing in his first AFCON game, silenced Cairo International Stadium in the 85th minute when he scored the only goal of the game during the 1-0 win.

He came to this game worried about his fitness levels but he soldiered on.

Bafana had performed poorly in the group stages, losing two games and managing to only win one.

Lorch set up a tantalising quarter-final match against Nigeria at the same venue on Wednesday.

This was only Lorch’s third game in Bafana colours and interestingly, he played in the one-all draw against Nigeria last year during the qualifiers.

He says this victory is good for the team’s confidence going forward and discusses their tactics from this game.

The goal was a swift counter-tack, Percy Tau took a thrown in his half, he then played a one-two with Bongani Zungu, who executed a quality through pass to Lebo Mothiba, it was two vs two with Lorch making a run towards the box and the French-based striker had a perfect assist.

The PSL Footballer of the season was well composed in his finishing, to score what was also the first and the last goal in this tournament against the hosts. – Report by Velile Mnyandu
