The negative impact of the looming trade war over United States tariffs is expected to top the agenda at the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) foreign ministers meeting in Pretoria on Monday.

The US was severely criticised by France, Canada and others at a G-7 finance ministers meeting at the weekend for its increased tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

President Cyril Ramaphosa met with the BRICS foreign ministers from Brazil, Russia, India and China in Pretoria on Sunday night.

Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has also expressed concern over Washington’s unilateral trade policies.

“We believe in multilateralism, and we are very concerned that the increasing option of unilateralism is a danger to the world. Multilateralism is the only way to influence the world and we must find consensus for us to take the world forward,” adds Sisulu.
