The briefing follows AstraZeneca’s announcement that its vaccine only offers limited protection against mild disease caused by the variant that has been discovered in South Africa.
The small study that hasn’t been peer-reviewed, was conducted in South Africa by Wits and the University of Oxford in the UK. It will be published on Monday.
South Africa has bought 1.5 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute in India of which a million doses arrived in the country last week. The rollout of the vaccines to inoculate healthcare workers will start this week.
