South Africa has gone back to level 3 lockdown amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The country currently has 1 021 451 cases and 27 568 fatalities.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the adjusted stricter regulations aimed at slowing down the spread of the pandemic on Monday, leaving some furious and others rejoicing.

The alcohol sales ban and beaches are the most contentious issues that have had South Africans talking.

Below is the list of all things that are off limits this festive season as per the revised COVID-19 rules:

  • Night vigils
  • After-funeral gatherings, including after tears gatherings
  • Social gatherings
  • Night clubs, bars, taverns, shebeen and similar establishments
  • Sale, distribution and transportation of liquor and the consumption of liquor in public places
  • Beaches, dams, rivers and lakes in areas declared as hotspots
  • Public parks, including public and recreational facilities
  • Public swimming pools, except for the training of professional athletes and swimming contests
  • The 33 land borders that remain closed
  • New initiations and post-initiation events (imigidi) for those who are already being initiated
  • Passenger ships for international leisure purposes, excluding small crafts – in line with health and border law enforcement protocols
