The National Liquor Traders Council (NLTC) has largely welcomed the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that the ban on the sale of alcohol has been lifted.

This follows calls from the liquor industry for government to relax the regulations saying they have adversely affected the sector.

In his address to the nation on Sunday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the sale will only be allowed from Monday to Thursday.

However, convener Lucky Ntimane says there are still some concerns.

“We still continue to question the science behind the 4 days trading for off-premises consumption. This is the time we needed to fully recover from the losses of the 28 days back that we’re to enjoy as the liquor industry.”

“However, our commitment to government as we are being able to operate from today is to continue to support all efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. That means we are going to ramp up our compliance efforts within our liquor traders to make sure that we fully comply,” adds Ntimane.
