The car driver reportedly tested positive to driving under the influence of alcohol.

A traffic officer has been killed after he was knocked down by an allegedly speeding driver in Strykraal village in the Sekhukhune District in Limpopo.

Transport Spokesperson Matome Moremi says the driver of the sedan tested positive to driving under the influence of alcohol.

The traffic officer died on arrival at the Lebowakgomo Hospital.

Traffic authorities say the traffic officer was trying to stop the motorist who had just skipped a Stop sign in the area.

The Department’s Matome Moremi says the driver, who was found to be allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, was immediately arrested.

Moremi says senior Department officials will visit the area to establish the facts, and also to comfort the bereaved family.

Meanwhile transport MEC Makoma Makhurupetje has expressed shock at what transpired.

In the Free State, one person has died after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle on the N1 near Kroonstad in the Free State.

Police spokesperson Sam Makhele says preliminary investigations have shown that the deceased’s vehicle tried to overtake a truck and collided with another vehicle.
