Limpopo mine vaccinates almost 4500 workers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The programme to vaccinate employees in the mining sector in Limpopo is continuing with close to 4500 mine workers at Marula Platinum Mine near Burgersfort having received the one dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

The Health Department launched the vaccination roll out plan in the mines last week. Mining executive, Moses Motlhageng, says they will also allow neighbouring mining communities to use the vaccination site.

“The intention is really to just cover the Marula employees and after that extend the same initiatives to the nearby communities. I assume or I think in the next coming weeks, the nearby community that is surrounding Marula will be covered by the same initiative.”

Employees at Marula Platinum Mine, who received their vaccines, have encouraged everyone in the sector to get vaccinated.

“I am also encouraging all the employees to come in numbers to come and be vaccinated so that they should work safely. As our motto is saying I am feeling that it is important for everyone to get vaccinated,” says one of the workers.

President pleased with vaccination progress

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is satisfied with the pace of vaccination throughout the country. He was speaking after visiting the Tembisa vaccination site at the Rabasotho Community Hall in Ekurhuleni on Thursday.

Ramaphosa also went to visit the private-public vaccination site in Midrand north of Johannesburg. His visit to these sites was aimed at motivating South Africans to embrace vaccination as the most viable weapon against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi was also upbeat about the progress being made in encouraging people to get vaccinated. Kubayi was speaking on a vaccination site visit alongside Ramaphosa.

“It is a milestone but we still have to push. It’s not yet there, you know my target set by the President is about 300 per day. So if I have not yet reached, it’s not yet what he wants but we are excited that he’s visiting the sites, it’s part of his monitoring the work that we are doing on vaccinations and hope South Africans will heed the call,” says Kubayi.
